Currently it is only possible to upload an image from the file system not use an image already present in the resources explorer.
With the hybrid approach it can be possible to reuse the same image from the resources explorer instead of uploading it multiple times.

The XSL rendering the image can choose to select the uploaded image or else the resource one, but using the uploaded image is more user friendly as this is the first field.
By setting required="true" on the image-hybrid element at least one of the two field must be filled.
Image resizing is only available for uploaded images.
